Control
Control is such a funny concept. Control isn’t something we really have over anything in this world. Yet we think we do. We focus on trying to control situations, conversations, outcomes, people, the world, even the weather. But we can’t control any of this. We can only control one thing. That is OURSELVES. We can only control OUR thoughts, OUR choices, OUR actions. We get to choose our responses, our consistency, our words.
Yet we always seem to want to control everything but ourselves. We want to try to control everything on the outside of us. This is the root cause of so much anxiety, so many broken relationships, so much disease. Our locus of control is actually very small. One of the most empowering choices you can make is to start to control only you. Only your choices, only your actions, only your thoughts. The hard part of this is that we then must release all the outcomes. What will come, will come. What will be, will be. The sooner we come into acceptance of this and begin to acknowledge that we did our best, we showed up and what happens in not within our control. No matter the response from the outside world, we can continue to choose. We can continue to put forth our effort and be satisfied in that. As we begin to do this, there is freedom that comes. There is so much energy to be had. There is so much joy in the releasing.
At first, my friend, taking your hands and your focus off outside things will feels scary. I promise you the security you feel in trying to control is all an illusion. Start today. Today, turn inward. Look at you. Focus on you. And your thoughts. Your actions. You’ll become addicted to it; I promise.
